look outside right now. and temperatures a little bit chilly in the morning. we'll ask tucker about our weekend in just a second but first we want to say hello to you. good morning. >> starting to feel a little bit like winter out there. >> yeah. i almost want to say a little bit like christmas but we need to get through thanksgiving. >> i'm still eating halloween candy. we can't get there yet. >> as much as it keeps coming into the station we'll be eating it for weeks. >> all of our coworkers bring the candy in. >> i'm 8 fun sizes in right now. it will feel great later. temperatures at reagan national in the 40s but we've got lots of 30s this morning. 37 in dulles, bwi marshall is 42 degrees. looking at your radar, generally quiet. we've got one shower there
6:02am
that's just popped up west of hagerstown. the rest of that is what we call ground clutter. moisture out there and the heavy rain earlier this week with sandy. but it should be a dry day today and at least partly sunny. i think more sunshine than we've seen in days so we're trepding in the right direction and right now we're setting up for a good looking weekend as far as sunshine is concerned so we should have a nice saturday and sunday. today partly sunny. mid-50s later this afternoon. kids at the bus stop want jackets. it's chilly out there this morning. >> all right. time now to say hello to our very own sunshine, clouds or no clouds we've got sunshine with julie wright. hello, julie. is that better? >> i was waiting for the snaps to come in and for sarah to bring in the oola las. and then i turn around and think dave ross is in the house. on the roads right now you're going to find your lanes open. not a lot happening out here on
6:03am
the beltway so far. here we are between 270 and tyson, light traffic volume in each direction. 270 getting a little heavier but no issues reported. no problems to report coming from the park all the way over towards the exit for 270. southbound bw parkway checking for a stalled vehicle. the trouble spot we had was a truck that we thought was on fire. all the activity is on the shoulder. eastbound 66 tapping the brakes ever so slightly here. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. all right. the latest now on the superstorm's toll. it's plamed for at least 94 deaths in the u.s. two of the victims a 4-year-old and his 2-year-old brother were swept away from their mother's arms as she tried to escape from the fast rising water in staten island. >> gas shortages continue to cause problems. long lines of gas stations are the norm right now.
6:04am
officials have reached an agreement with a major fuel supplier to ensure crucial operations can continue. aaa says the fuel shortages are caused by the fact that many stations can't pump gas because they don't have power. and fuel trucks are having trouble delivering because of storm damage. here at home our power crews in our area are being deployed to help the storm victims to our north. >> dominion virginia is staging hundreds of workers as they prepare to head to new jersey. >> reporter: good morning. you know, we get help here when we have massive storms and power outages. we get help from out of state and now it's time for dominion virginia to return that favor as millions of people in the northeast remain without power from that superstorm sandy. joining me now to tell us a little bit more about what dominion is doing is the spokes
6:05am
person for dominion virginia. how big of an eft is this for you? >> we'll be sending about 1,500 people up to new jersey to assist with the restoration there. that's about the biggest contingent we've ever sent out of state. but we're happy to do it because as you said, we've received assistance many times before. we're going up with 1,500 people, five different contingents that have between 6 to 60 buckets and we'll have patrollers, line crews and we'll have some point people and managerial people there to help. we have trailers that we're bringing up that will have lodging. we'll have our own catering so that first energy, the company that we'll be assisting does not have to worry about us except to give us the orders so we can go out and help them get power back on. >> you're leaving about 7:30 today from national harbor. when do you ebbs president-elect to arrive in new jersey, where do you anticipate you'll be working and how long will those
6:06am
crews be there? >> it will be a four to five-hour trip for us. we will go to lakewood, new jersey and there's a staging ground there. our crews will be processed there and be given work to do. probably work will begin either later today, they'll work the evening shift or they'll begin first thing tomorrow morning. >> and these are crews that have already been on the road since sunday. how long do you anticipate they will be in new jersey or perhaps even in new york? >> that's right. this crew -- these folks have been working really since last sunday because we put our crews on 12-hour sand by beginning on sunday. they helped with restoration in the dominion service area and now they'll be working up there. we anticipate they could be there for as long as two weeks but let's hope not that long. >> all right. thank you very much. we should note that they were able to restore power to their more than 200,000 customers hit
6:07am
by sandy. that's what allowed them to free up their crews to start heading up north into the northeast to help out there. that's the latest there, back to you. >> thank you, sherry. on campaign trail now we are just four days out from the election. >> to ensure voting can continue in places that still don't have power, nernl is rolling out military trucks to polling places next tuesday. a new washington post tracking poll shows president obama with 49% support to mitt room knee's 48%. president obama will campaign in ohio today while republican challenger mitt romney will be in wisconsin. gorn nor romney was in virginia yesterday and president obama will return to northern virginia tomorrow for a campaign stop. later this morning both camps will be watching the latest jobs report. if it's the last one before the election. >> changes to speed and red light camera spine fines.
6:08am
>> but first a man accused of a string of pipe bombings. we'll many or on that coming up when fox 5 morning news continues.
6:09am
6:10am
6:11am
there is some breaking news from northern virginia this morning. a suspect has been killed by sheriff's deputies. this happened around 4:00 this morning on tack et mill road near the staff ford county line. authorities tell us the incident began as an accident investigation. it's unclear though how it's kalated to a deadly shooting. we'll continue to follow that throughout the morning. the nationwide man hunt for a virginia man accused of trying to kill his exgirlfriend and two police officers using pipe bombs had ended in montana. lawrence stewart was caught after a brief police chase. officers had to deplait flat his tires using spike strips after stewart threw a pipe bomb at
6:12am
them during the pursuit. a massachusetts man who planned to blow up the u.s. capitol and the pentagon will spend the next 17 years in prison. he pled guilty over the summer to attempting to provide materials to terrorists. he also had plans to destroy federal billings. he was going to use remote controlled planes filled with explosives to plea up the buildings. you've heard the talk and today we will finally find out what changes are coming to d.c. for speeding and red light cameras. >> we're back in a moment. anncr: which do you believe?
6:13am
what mitt romney's tv ads say ababout women? or what mitt romney himself says? mitt romney: do i believe the supreme court... should overturn roe v. wade? yes. and it would be my preference that they, that they... reverse roe v. wade. hopefully reverse roe v. wade. overturn roe v. wade. planned parenthood, we're going to get rid of that. i'll cut off funding to planned parenthood. anncr: no matter what mitt romney's ads say. we know what he'll do. president obama: i'm barack obama and... i approve this message.
6:14am
6:15am
annou"a champion of the tea poparty...an ideologuet: who is part of the problem in congress." bartlett calls medicare unconstitutional. and even wants to completely abolish student loans for college. no wonder bill clinton and the washington post both endorse john delaney for his deep understanding of job creation. he'll be "an unusually effective congressman." delaney: it's not about politics. it's about doing what's right to help the middle class. i'm john delaney, and i approve this message. it's 6:15 right now. if you see snowplows around the stadium this morning don't panic. the district is holding a dry run to make sure crews are ready
6:16am
for winter weather. about 700 plow drivers will hit their regular routes while the rest of the snow team will make sure they're up to date on what needs to be done the next time it snows. >> a live look outside, you can see the washington monument off in the distance there. it's friday. so it's all good. yeah, we don't need any of that winter weather right now. >> i feel like we're going to get it soon. i don't know why. >> because you know what? because it felt wintery yesterday. >> maybe that's it and we had that crazy weather. >> and west virginia is getting inundated with it. >> it's close. >> and the problem is i don't care how many snowplows are out, people always act like we've never seen snow around here. as soon as the snow starts falling people are like i can't drive anymore. it snows here every year. >> it's been an issue for a long, long time. >> i'm not sure things are going to change. >> probably not. >> you do need to worry about
6:17am
this. you need to turn your clocks back early saturday night. i want to encourage you to check your batteries in your smoke detectors, that kind of thing and a lot of people now have the carbon monoxide detector too. and enjoy your extra hour of sleep. the sun will start to set by sunday right after the 5:00 hour. >> really? >> it's going to start getting dark early so that will be the drawback. but for us though we'll still be up an hour early. reagan national 32 degrees. cull pepper just lost 30 degrees. it's very chilly out there. 41 in leonard town. 45 in annapolis. temperatures are changing as we speak. 40 now in fredericksburg. >> all right. looking at the satellite radar. a little cloud cover we're working through right now. and we had some clear skies so
6:18am
here's good news. more sunshine than yesterday. will it be a perfectly sunny day? afraid not but it will at least be partly sunny today. more sunshine than yesterday and i guess the threat of a sprinkle early today north and west of town. i don't think we'll see any threat of it around here. we'll see more sunshine both saturday and sunday than we've seen all week as this is really the remnants of sandy still kind of hanging out across new england and the mid-atlantic. we'll get that out off here. cool saturday and sunday. looks to be a little on the cool side. 55 today. partly sunny skies. still cool for this time of year. should be in the low 60s so we're running a good 5 to 8 degrees below normal. cold overnight. winds southwest from 5 to 10. i know we've got lots of outdoor activities going on. redskins sunday afternoon. both of those look just fine. we'll be cool for both events and by early next week for our
6:19am
election day on tuesday. right now i put partly sunny. there is going to be a coastal storm. it could get in here as early as tuesday afternoon. highs in the low to mid-50s early next week as well. let's do some traffic and good morning, julie. >> good morning to you, tucker. on the roads you'll find your lanes are open traveling to and from the wilson bridge. no problems to report there. i just tweeted we do have a stalled car at alabama a. that's what's tying up the right side of the highway. if you're traveling around town you'll find that your lanes are open, no problems reported right now across the american he john bridge. traffic flowing freely and no trouble spots to report on the inner loop toward the toll road. the current sky fox with us now checking the route along i-95.
6:20am
let's take it back inside. southbound along 270, again, little pockets of congestion coming in, you're down to 31 miles per hour. back up to speed at the double nickel headed out. no problems between college park and bethesda. all right. well, a lot of people in the district have complained that pedocameras are just to make money for the d.c. government. so this morning the mayor will announce some changes. he will speak at the mayor's press briefing room at city hall along with the police chief and transportation officials. the speed cameras automatly fine drivers and have brought in an estimated $85 million this fiscal year. >> the people have smoken and maybe we'll hear what they're having to say. coming up next we'll go to fox business net work in new york. >> it's not a poll but a crucial number coming out later this morning could have a big impact on the presidential election.
6:21am
the latest jobs report will be released later on this morning. it's the last one before the election. we'll take a closer look at what could come out of it when fox 5 morning news continues. i was suddenly, 60 years old. i had no health care. mainly i was thinking about my family. how am i going to take care of my family. he promised us the same things he's promising the united states. and he'll give you the same thing he gave us. nothing. anncr: priorities usa action is responsible for the content of this advertising. but to me, it's money that i earned. man: to some people, social security is just a number. i count on social security. and i don't want washington politicians like george allen... privatizing it. if george allen wants to risk his own money on wall street... that's fine. but i don't want him risking mine. george allen just isn't watching out for us.
6:22am
anncr: the democratic senatorial campaign committee is... responsible for the content of this advertising. real big deals of the week. or how to get great prices on things you need. heading into the holidays you look for the best deals. that's why we give you real big club card deals each week. right now, get a super low price on tide, $10.99 for 100 ounces. 12 rolls of bounty are $11.99. that's a dollar a roll! and charmin is $11.99 for 30 rolls.
6:23am
real big deals this week and every week. only at safeway. ingredients for life.
6:24am
welcome back. president obama and republican challenger mitt romney are making every minute count on the campaign trail but this morning there will be a brief pause as they keep their eyes on the last jobs reports before election day. we're live in new york with this morning's business beat. we'll talk about the jobs report in a bit. first let's take a look at the markets. nice rally. we needed it. >> yeah, good morning. that's right. the ball was off and running. a lot of economic data pept up from earlier in the week. the federal government shut down and famously wall street shut down for two days, first time we've seen that by weather since 1888 closing the stock exchange across the land.
6:25am
clearly some buying power coming into the market. retail sales better than expected. we did see home prices rising on wednesday so basically a lot of good economic data has got people into a buying mood. the biggest gains in six weeks yesterday. >> good. we needed that. let's get back to the big news of the day. it's going to be this last jobs report coming out and it could have a big impact on a lot of things. >> no doubt. you know, the candidates will be trying to be busily at work after 8:00 eastern time. a gain of 125,000 nonfarm jobs added to payrolls in the month of october is what they're looking for. the unemployment rate is expected to pick up slightly to 7.9%. also another number we're watching average hourly earnings expected to rise by two b tepts of 1 percent but that has not kept the pace of inflation over the last couple of years. you want to see people pocketing
6:26am
more cash and you want them to continue expansion time so this will be closely watched. the candidates will try to make some last second hay with this. we'll find out the numbers in a few hours' time. >> thanks so much. >> have a good day. >> have a good weekend. thanks. still ahead, as more days passed since the superstorm slammed new york and new jersey victims face new challenges in their attempts to get life back to normal. what's happening to keep gas shortages from getting worse? we'll find out when we return. [ earnest ] out of the blue one day,
6:27am
6:28am
we were told to build a 30-foot stage. gathered the guys and we built that 30-foot stage, not knowing what it was for. just days later, all three shifts were told to assemble in the warehouse. a group of people walked out on that stage and told us that the plant is now closed and all of you are fired... i looked both ways, i looked at the crowd, and...we all just lost our jobs. we don't have an income. mitt romney made over 100 million dollars by shutting down our plant and devastated our lives.
6:29am
turns out that when we built that stage, it was like building my own coffin, and it just made me sick. [ male announcer ] priorities usa action is responsible for the content of this advertising. welcome back. let's get the latest on superstorm sandy. it's being blamed now for at least 94 deaths in the u.s. two of the victims a 4-year-old and his 2-year-old brother were swept away from her mother's arms as she tried to escape the fast rising waters in staten island. utilities say it could be ten days before power is restored to everyone and gas shortages
6:30am
continue to cause problems. many stations don't have the power to pump the gas and fuel trucks are having trouble making deliveries because of the storm damage. the new york sometime times errors some of the services were slowed down yesterday but officials have reached an agreement with a major fuel supplier to ensure crucial operations can continue. >> it's like a vicious cycle. they can't get to that and you know -- >> and now it's cold. it's going to be the issue. very cold temperatures along the jersey coastline up to new york. of course it's cold here too. >> all right. let's do temperatures and the regional map so we'll take a look at new york city. 46 in new york and a little cooler there. of course once you get outside the city so they're probably in the low 40s so here in our area, washington 44 tho morning but lots of 30s. out at dulles, 37 degrees.
6:31am
so we're chilly as well. 37 columbus. 41 in richmond and let's see. looks like raleigh 36 degrees. look at that. all the way down in the carolinas dipping into the 30s early. cloud cover moving through at the moment. our next little upper level disturbance coming through. this one will be less organized than yesterday. we'll see more sunshine. partly sunny today and we shoub should be dry although it will be cool out there with highs expected to top out in the mid-50s. i know it's only the second day of november but not your imagination. it has been cooler lately. 55 in washington. 54 leonard town. 51 in frederick. >> i kind of like it when it's cool in november. >> it should be. right? >> you don't want in the 80s right now. >> good eating weather. >> that's right. unfortunately we keep eating and eating. stay away from the fun sized candy bars by the way.
6:32am
let's get to traffic now. >> i just tweeted i think we're all fun sized next to wisdom. >> yeah, you're a supersize. wait a minute. >> what was it? oh, fun size. >> all right. wisdom, sh. >> i'll be quiet. >> we're going to say ladies he looks good until he starts talking. all right. let's go to the sky 5. we've got some delay to report. northbound on 395 as you continue from the capitol beltway, no accidents to report thanks for the great shot. you'll find lanes are open, heavy and slow. no accidents, just volume and that's pretty much what we're finding in virginia on northbound i-95. traffic tapping the brakes again at the parkway. we'll take it inside. eastbound along 66, lanes are open but'll notice
6:33am
the slowdown coming in from manassas and centerville down to about 35 miles per hour here. now checking for the stalled car reported. definitely something here. we're down to 24 miles per hour before the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. all right. in wake of superstorm sandy help is on the way from our area to get the lights and heat back on for the storm victims in the northeast. dominion virginia is sending hundreds of utility workers and trucks to restore power in new jersey. they're getting ready to leave in just about an hour. the fair fax county search and rescue team is also helping hurricane victims. these videos show them rescuing people in new jersey tuesday night. it's unclear how long they will stay in new jersey. members are now waiting for their next assignment and i'm sure they will be busy for a while. we are just four days out from the election now.
6:34am
>> and to ensure voting can continue in places that still don't have power, new jersey is rolling out military trucks to polling places next tuesday. now, a new washington post abc news tracking poll shows president obama with 49% support to romney's 48%. president obama will campaign in ohio today. republican challenger romney will be in wisconsin. governor romney was in virginia yesterday and president obama will return to northern virginia tomorrow for a campaign stop. later this morning both camps will be watching the latest jobs report. if it's the last one before the election. time now for the morning line. the redskins are rocking a different look this weekend. they will wear their 1937 throwback jerseys on sunday when they take on the panthers. that's not why everyone is buzzing -- that's not what everyone is buzzing about this weekend for the game. i like those uniforms by the
6:35am
way. the big battle is two highs man trophy quarterbacks. good morning. how are you doing? >> good morning. >> first of all i want to talk about those uniforms. they are nice compareed to what we saw last week on pittsburgh. >> the uniforms look the same, the players don't. >> the guys on the left aren't showing up against the panthers. then the redskins are in real trouble. >> so we've got cam newton versus rg 3 essentially this weekend. what can we expect? you know, last time i talked a little smack in favor of the redskins so i'm not saying a word this week. >> i think the redskins have their hands full. we've talked about it all morning. the panthers are 1-6 but a lot of their games have been close. the only game they were blown out is by the giants. cam newton is obviously a threat to them. we all know how poor the redskins are defensively.
6:36am
i think they have their hands full. >> you've seen clips of what cam newton is doing this year and that's turning the football over. this year cam newton has got five touchdowns 8 interceptions, a bunch of fumbles to go with that. he's cost them games. >> but usually when a guy is throwing interceptions it's buzz he's pressured and that's one thing the redskins don't do. they don't pressure the cart witherback. >> you do have a team coming in close to imploding. they were winning that game last week against the bears, allowed the bears to outscore them 16-3 in the fourth quarter. we've seen the cam newton press conferences, this is the game that the redskins have to win at home. >> i think it's one of the biggest games mike shan happen has had here to be hon hest with you. it's a team that's reeling. it's a quarterback that's not playing well, but a lot of people say cam newton is due to
6:37am
have a game like he had last year against the skins. if the skins lose i think the relevance of the season for the skins is gone. >> if you want to be optimistic we looked at the schedule. 6 of the final 8 games for the redskins are against teams with sub5 hundred records so if they can get this win, get healthy during the buy, maybe they can come back stronger in the second half. >> the counter to that is we have a sub5 hundred record. we're just as bad as those guys. >> you make it sound like the redskins are like 7-1 julier naughts and they're not. >> i do remember that cam newton came in and they were like 1-5 last year so i'm just going to watch the game and let it play out. >> they can certainly win. >> all right. have a good weekend. >> you do the same. the guy from 106.7 the fan. thanks for joibing us and talking with us this morning.
6:38am
coming up next, it would be tough to top the toy story movie but the latest release is getting a whole lot of buzz. and den cel washington is back on the screen. why everybody's talking about flight when fox 5 morning news continues. problem in congress." bartlett calls medicare unconstitutional. and even wants to completely abolish student loans for college. no wonder bill clinton and the washington post both endorse john delaney for his deep understanding of job creation. he'll be "an unusually effective congressman." delaney: it's not about politics. it's about doing what's right to help the middle class. i'm john delaney, and i approve this message.
6:39am
6:40am
6:41am
we're going to talk movies right now. two very big and very different movies open today. movie reviewer joins us now via skype from l.a. how are you doing? noo how are you doing today? >> thanks for getting up so early by the way. first of all tell us why you ear in l.a. right now. >> i'm getting the exclusive one on one sitdown interviews for our market with christian
6:42am
stewart, robert pat inson, for the last twilight film. i saw the film last night. i can't give a review on the movie yet. all i can say is that twilight fans are going to be blown away by a certain aspect of this movie but that will be coming on november 16th and we have the exclusive interviews with those three actors coming up on fox 5, the week of the 16th so anybody that wants to tweet me a question i might be able to ask them for you. so if you have a question i might be able to sneak it in with kristen stuart this morning. >> you know there's going to be some relationship questions. there's all kinds of drama surrounding this thing. >> i know for a fact if i walked in there and asked a relationship question i would be kicked out immediately. >> kicking and screaming. >> i wouldn't even sit down. the guy would say you're done and her security guards would walk in and drag me out i know for the fact. >> let's get to some movies that
6:43am
you're reviewing. wreck it ralph. this is a big one that you say may be the best animated story since toy story? >> i would 100% agree with that. i walked in this film, i knew nothing about it. it's like this sleeper movie about a bad guy, villain and wreck-it ralph who basically wants to be a good guy. he lives in an arcade game and he goes about his life as a bad guy. once the arcade games get shut off at nighttime all the characters live in this world and since he's a bad guy he doesn't get to interact with anybody and he feels really bad. so he makes it a goal for himself to go out and win a medal. he enters another video game and kind of wreaks havoc in this game twisting things upside down and learning life lessons. it's such a great idea because you have this bad guy villain
6:44am
who's visiting aa meetings with other villains and street fighter and mortal combat and they're all like dude, it's okay. you're a villain, it's your goal in life and he wants more for himself. it's a wonderful story. it's such a creative movie. wildly imaginative. it's a smart movie for kids and it's exactly what the toy story films did for kids as well. i gave it a 4 and a half out of 5. i absolutely love wreck-it ralph. take your kids to see it. it is so much fun. one of the best i've seen in a long time. >> and another one, the movie flight and you have not been able to see it yet. correct? what was it, the preview was cancelled due to the storm? noo right. it was on this past monday. they cancelled the screening because of the hurricane and now i'm out in l.a. tonight and i saw the twilight movie but i have a lot of information to give about the film.
6:45am
it's written by a guy named robert zemeckis. i'll be reviewing the movie but it's the first live action film for the writer in 12 years. he hasn't made a live action since cast away. it's about a pilot who crash lands the plane. but they find out later on that he was on some type of alcohol, some type of drugs. the movie deals with his addiction and from what i'm hearing that plane crash aspect is only a small amount of the movie. it deals more with his addiction of drugs and alcohol so apparently he's going to be nominated for an academy award for best actor so i'll have that for you tomorrow on my twitter. okay. real quick we just have a little bit of time left. i want to kind of give you props here. you just got nominated for an award. tell us about this the national entertainment journalism award?
6:46am
>> yeah. i'm freaked out about it. i'm up against the hollywood reporter and radar online, an interview i did with steven spielberg back in december. the awards on november 18th so i'm crossing my fingers. i don't know if i have any chance of winning those against those big named outlets. the award is actually for my interview that aired on wttg. >> we all remember that interview with steven spielberg. >> i'm making my movie for spielberg right now. he told me to make a movie and send it to him. we just finished. we shot it, we're editing it this weekend and should be done the next couple of weeks so we're sending it off to spielberg. >> this is such great news. good luck to you and thanks again for getting up so early to talk with us. >> any time and follow me on twitter. i'll have my review of flight tomorrow morning. i'm so sorry the screening was cancelled but i'll have the
6:47am
review tomorrow morning i promise. >> isn't that awesome? >> that's huge. he's up against those people and -- >> and he's making a movie and giving it to spielberg? i'd be nervous. >> i know. >> that looks like a pretty nice hotel room he was in too. he used to be in those small boxes. now he's got the big deck out there. >> dealing with spielberg, things are changes. >> he really wants to take it to the next level he should put us in the movie. >> i'm working on that. >> looks like your forecast, i want to remind you one more time that you've got some time changes this weekend. if you like sunshine you'll have to get up earlier because the sun will start setting just after the 5:00 hour starting sunday afternoon so that's a big deal for the weekend. it's cold. yeah, temperatures falling back into the 30s for the area. down to 32 degrees in manassas.
6:48am
so we've got some chilly temperatures. let's see. 37 gaithersburg. 32 in baltimore. the mountains about 40 degrees in hagerstown so a chilly start to your day. clearing overnight and that allows the temperatures to really fall off. a mix of clouds and sunshine today. clouds moving through at the moment, but as i mentioned we did have some clearing overnight and i do think we'll have more sunshine than we've had in the past several days. won't be a perfect day but at least it will be a little nicer than what we've had over here for much of the week. a couple of light showers north and west. it's posz you believe up to the mountains you might see a sprinkle here early, but i don't think we'll see much else in the way of precipitation today. out to the west high pressure will build in this weekend, get this hole. get the remnants of sandy out of here once and for all and we're looking at a nice weekend. still cool this time of year.
6:49am
winds 5 to 10 miles per hour. weekend looks generally bright and sunny. it will be a little cool both saturday and sunday with temperatures in the low to mid-50s and let me mention right around election day tuesday, wednesday time period. you probably heard us talk about this noreaster. it looks like it probably will happen, but time is still some question marks. that would just bring us some rain. it will be a wet and rainy day, but not a superstorm. >> let's hope late tuesday. late, late tuesday, because of course the election and everything. we don't want it getting involved with that. >> you probably hear the voice of tony per kins. >> sorry. >> good morning to all of you and good morning everybody. guess what it's time for? ask tony and tucker still keeping it low key. >> maybe next week. >> nond we'll try and get back to everything. this is a segment where we put our heads together to answer
6:50am
your most pressing questions weather related or otherwise. today's question comes from melody. her question is about storm safety. she writes i live in a small apartment on the second floor and i've heard that people in homes with basements should go to a basement when a storm hits but what should people living in apartments do? >> well, excellent question as a lot of people live in apartments. in the event of a severe storm and particularly you hear this when there's a threat of a tornado and everything but you can follow this one certainly when there's a real bad storm when like what we had with sandy. you can follow these guidelines. you're told the go to the basement if you have a house with a basement. well, the same would be true if you live in an apartment building that has a basement. get out of your apartment and go to the basement of the apartment building. >> maybe the laundry room downstairs or whatever. >> the lowest level. the key is you want to be the
6:51am
lowest level possible and in an area without windows so that's the key there. the one trick on that is if you're in a coastal community you don't want to the basement when you're dealing with a flood issue. >> yeah. we're talking about winds, tornados, that kind of thing right now, but yeah, that's a very good point. >> what if you don't have a basement? because growing up in the south they used to tell us to get in the bathtub. we never did that. but they used to tell us that. >> okay. i'll get to the bathtub in just a second. if you live in an apartment and the building doesn't have a basement you want to get to the interior most room. so kind of picture your apartment what room or closet maybe it is is the most inside, not near windows, you know, that's going to be the safest place to be. that's going to depend on the size of the storm, tornado, et cetera, but as inside as you can
6:52am
be, protected with no windows. bathtubs they used to talk about because a bathtub can -- well, in the old days a bathtub could afford you some decent protection. they would say put a mattress over the bathtub. many years ago the bathtub was made out of cast iron steel. great protection. well, not anymore. a lot of bathtubs are plastic bre it or not. so i do not think a bathtub offers -- most bathtubs i'll say offer the same type of protection but if that's the safest place you've got in your apartment do it. pull a mattress over you. >> something else to remember here with sandy passing and of course one of the tragedies have been all the trees that have fallen o-on people's homes is you went get -- another reason to get as far inside your house as you can or to those lower levels because the trees fall on the upper levels of the house. >> to some extent, i'm not being funny here. in some cases if you've got a
6:53am
super big storm or a big tornado which we don't tend to get here, you know, you've got to pray. because we've seen the destruction that can occur in some places. this is what will afford you the most protection if you can't get someplace quick that will protect you more than do these things and hopefully you'll be protected. >> all right. >> good question. >> thank you very much for the question. hopefully we won't have to deal with much of this anymore. if you have a question that you want answered go to my fox dc.com and click on the weather tab. there you go. >> let's check in with julie and get the latest on traffic out there. >> good morning, you guys. let's start out with the crew on sky 5. overall the pace is a low speed headed eastbound. traffic continues slowly from 50 to 123. we'll show you what else is happening out here on the roads. the belt way down to 40 miles
6:54am
per hour. by the time you get over towards connecticut avenue well above speed at 56 miles per hour. southbound 270, down to 33 minutes, a slow roll southbound on 270. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. thank you, julie. a 99-year-old woman in florida who has lived through two dozen presidential elections is voting for the first time in her life. lewis was inspired to vote after president obama won the election four years ago. she said she promised herself if she lived to see another election she would vote. she requested a ballot by mail and a family friend helped her fill it out and turn it in. >> better late than never. still ahead, from a superstar chef to local food favorites. >> the cooking show has a fulmen ewe of fun and holly's got more on that coming up in our next hour. turns out, romney doesn't oppose contraception at all.
6:55am
in fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life. this issue's important to me, but i'm more concerned about the debt our children will be left with. i voted for president obama last time, but we just can't afford four more years.
